View from the top of the hill

Our little corner of paradise is located in Northwest Arkansas, nestled in the beauty of the Ozarks. We're off Hwy 74 between Huntsville and Kingston. The big cities of Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers and Bentonville are about an hour away. Branson, MO is to the north about an hour and a half away.
This view is taken from the top of the hill, just as you come off of Highway 74 onto County Road 3622. The community is spread out before you like a picture postcard. Believe me, this photo doesn't do it justice. Our 3.357 acres is off to the left, down at the bottom of the hill. Come join me for a little tour...

Welcome to Living Springs

This is the road leading into the community of Living Springs. County Road 3180. If you continue straight, you go right into our driveway. You won't find "Living Springs" on the map, but as neighbors and friends, you won't find a nicer bunch of folks. Some worship at the community center every Sunday. Some go to church in town. In any case, if ever you need a hand, you can be sure somebody will step forward. This is a great place to raise kids, and dogs, and other living creatures!

The mobile home

This is a very nice mobile home - it's a Dutch built mobile home, built in 1998, so its still fairly new. Six inch walls, so it's well insulated. It's 16x68. Two bedrooms, two full bathrooms. Separate shower and garden tub in the master bath. Brand new septic system, new electric range, and new dishwasher. Central heat and air, with a wood stove for backup (which we haven't used yet). Quite cozy. We have a Direct TV satellite dish and DSL for the computer. Most of the property is fenced with hog wire and t-post fencing, 4 feet high. Enough for a cow, or a pony, or dogs. My dogs tend to roam free; I just like to have them inside the fence at night.

All the appliances stay - Refrigerator, new electric range, dishwasher, washer and dryer.
What you see is fenced now (for the dogs at night). We do have a variety of wildlife around here - deer, coyote, armadillo, box turtles, and a whole slew of God's creatures.

Prayer Lake

Prayer Lake is a very short walking distance from our place. When driving in from Huntsville, it's on the right hand side off Highway 74. We're the next turn onto County Road 3622, then a curve at the bottom of the hill takes you to County Road 3180. That's us! Easy to get to, and no, you don't need a 4-wheel drive. Far enough off the road to not have to deal with traffic noise, but close enough to zip into town when you need to.

Prayer Lake with boats

Prayer Lake is a manmade lake and is used for fishing, and swimming. There is also a spring used for drinking water. It's a short walk from our place, and walking around the lake makes for a nice evening's stroll. The dogs love it!

Down the drive

This is taken from the front porch, looking down the driveway. Our property is to the right; the neighbor's is to the left. Nobody gets real uptight about what's "yours, mine or ours" around here. Before we fenced it the neighborhood children used to play softball in our front field. They still play soccer in the field between the community building and the house close to the lake. See the hillside in the distance? In the Autumn the trees change color and New England would hang its head in shame to see the color!

As you can see from this photo, the mobile home nestles in the shade of these wonderful tall trees. The small trees in front you see are apple trees. There are four in the front and two in the back. And yes, they DO get apples!

This is the rear of the mobile home, taken in winter. The walls of the mobile are six inches thick, so it's very well insulated. Toasty in the winter and cool in summer. The mound you see is the woodpile. We have a woodstove in case the power goes out, but we haven't had to use it in the 4 years we've been here. In the summer you can just open up the windows and not even use the A/C. The windows are double-paned storm windows and raise up and down rather than sideways. In addition, the lower window will fold in for easy cleaning.

The chicken house

The wooden building straight ahead is the chicken house. It was used as a chicken house once, but we cleaned it out and put shelves in to make it usable for storage. The cars are no longer there. And the mobile home in the back is rented. The long building in the back is the goat barn, not used for goats, but for storage. And the building to the left is the tractor barn - yes, used for tractors! Neither belongs to us, but is used by the community.

Our first Winter here

Here we are, my hubby and I. This photo was taken from behind the mobile home and looking towards the side of the property. The edge of the property is bounded by bushes and trees along two sides, and fenced on the other two sides. The white building you see in the distance is the Loy Building, which was used until recently as a church. The farmer's cow pasture is beyond that.

Prayer Lake in Autumn

This is a photo of Prayer Lake in the Autumn. Gorgeous even with the leaves off the trees. The lake is for the use of the community - fishing and swimming. No motor boats allowed, and modest attire is required if one is going to swim. This view looks towards the dam. The lake is just across the field from us, past the community center.

Taking the dogs for a walk

This is the road that runs along the lake. No cars are allowed on the road (it's blocked off to vehicular traffic), so its perfect for walking. The trail goes all the way around the lake, perhaps a nice mile or so. The bushes to the right are berry bushes, and there's nothing finer on a summer's day than to take your walk and nibble fresh berries right off the bush at the same time!

Walking wonders

Just across the road from our place is this wonderful old barn. This really is a walker's paradise. We often take our dogs for their morning run over to the lake. This barn is across from the community building.

A foggy morning

This is one of my favorite photos of our property. It was taken one foggy Spring morning, when the air was brisk and clean. Taken from our front porch, the edge of the property are the bushes you see. There is a county road just the other side, and opposite the road is a farmer's cow pasture. My dogs love to go over and schmooze with the cows on occasion. They also head off in the morning and make the rounds of saying hello to the neighbors.

This photo was taken from our front porch. We have almost 3 and 1/2 acres, most of which is fenced. Now, the fence is not a property fence, but was intended to keep the dogs in at night. Even so, it would be great for a pony, or your own dogs, or maybe even a cow! We're far enough away from the road (Hwy 74) so that your dogs can pretty much roam freely. Ours do!

My hubby on his tractor

This photo is of my hubby on his prized 1948 International Harvester Farmall Cub tractor. This is taken in the front "yard." The bushes you see are the boundaries of the front part of the property, and I believe are blackberry bushes. We also have four apple trees in the front and two in the back.

There are fish in the lake

This photo is of one of the neighbor children with a fish she caught in the lake. Prayer Lake is a manmade lake, just a tiny way aways to the left of this photo. This photo was taken right outside our front gate, looking towards the front of the property and the road. For you golfers, there's a golf course in Huntsville too.

Yes, it snows here.

This photo was taken from our back porch. What you see is my hubby, bundled up like Nanook of the North. The chicken house is to the left. We converted the chicken house to a storage building, but could easily be converted right back again if you wanted chickens. The building to the right is the tractor barn (for community use), and the long building in the back is the goat barn, not used for goats, but for storage. After this photo was taken part of this area was fenced.

A snowy day. We've been here for four years and there hasn't really been that much snow. Enough for it still to be exciting for this Southern California girl! This photo is from our front porch, looking towards the neighbor's house. The building in the distance is the community building, used for worship on Sundays and other activities during the week.

Well, I guess that's about it. You may be wondering why we're leaving. Believe me, there is a part of my heart that will always remain here. We've made good, life-time friends, and will always treasure the support and love we've found here. But my husband's health is now such that keeping up such a large piece of property is no longer a viable option. He's been battling cancer for over a year, and recently had the lower half of his left lung removed, and he's well past the "spring chicken" category. So, we've decided to move back to California and get a mobile home in a nice park, with limited upkeep.

One of my regrets is that my dogs will have to get used to a small fenced yard. That's going to be tough for them, since they're used to roaming. But, they'll go where the "pack leaders" go, I suppose, and be happy.

Right now, Spring is here and it's beautiful! Everything is green, the birds have returned, and the trees along the perimeter of the property are decked out in white flowers.
